The Claddagh design features two hands (friendship) clasping a heart (love) and a crown (loyalty). If you wear it a specific way it gives a different meaning :

On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: single

On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: in a relationship

On the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: engaged.

On the left ring finger with the point of the heart toward the wrist: married
